THE SYSTEM 5000 SOLUTION The Model 5000, the cornerstone of SynOptics' System 5000 product family, represents the industry's first intelligent hub platform to deliver a structured networking solution for today's enterprise networks while providing an open path to future LAN technologies. The Model 5000 is designed to support highly-segmented enterprise networks by providing a central point of integration and administration for distributed environments. Residing in the network center, the Model 5000 unites distributed System 3000- and System 2000-based Ethernet, Token Ring and FDDI networks as a single, cohesive system, optimizing the use of centralized network resources such as servers, bridges and routers. The Model 5000 also includes a built-in path to the high-speed switching technologies of the future, enabling customers to incrementally migrate their shared-media LANs to switched backbone networks without sacrificing existing investments. SYSTEM 5000 ETHERNET HOST MODULES The System 5000 Ethernet host modules deliver complete connectivity solutions across a wide range of unshielded twisted pair and fiber optic cabling. The modules operate at 10 megabits per second (Mb/s) over the 12 Ethernet segments available on the Model 5000 backplane, offering tremendous configuration flexibility for high-density structured networking environments. Modules can be assigned to specific segments by either manually setting a switch or by software selection available through the Optivity(tm) network agement system. Users also have the option to isolate modules from the hub backplane segments, creating independent, stand-alone Ethernet segments. All System 5000 Ethernet modules include custom RRC connectivity ASICs, which perform retiming and repeater functions for each Ethernet segment. A custom on-board frame processing unit (FPU) and and digital signal processor (DSP) on each module collect, count and categorize core statistics on a per-port basis, off-loading System 5000 Ethernet network management modules while providing simple visibility into network performance. A built-in RS-232 Service Port, accessible through the Model 5000 hub's Supervisory Module, provides a method for testing and monitoring Ethernet modules locally when the network management station is in another location. Each System 5000 Ethernet module also stores its own boot configuration image in non-volatile memory, enabling the modules to retain user settings following power cycles or removal and replacement in the Model 5000 hub. Three System 5000 Ethernet modules are available: the Model 5378-F Quad Cluster Ethernet Host Module; the Model 5308 10BASE-T Host Module; and the Model 5308-AF 10BASE-T Host Module with AUI and Fiber Interconnect Ports. MODEL 5378-F QUAD CLUSTER ETHERNET HOST MODULE The Model 5378-F Quad Cluster Ethernet Host Module provides distributed SynOptics wiring closet hubs with full access to centralized resources located in the network center. The module includes four port "clusters," each featuring one fiber and four 10BASE-T connections. The fiber ports offer ST-type bayonet connectors to support downlinks from SynOptics System 3000(tm) and LattisHub(tm) System 2000(tm) workgroups located throughout the enterprise. The four 10BASE-Tsociated with each fiber link offer RJ-45 modular receptacles to provide distributed workgroups with efficient access to servers, bridges, routers and other critical equipment located in the network center. All fiber ports on the Model 5378-F are compatible with the IEEE 802.3 10BASE-F specification for 10 Mb/s Ethernet operating over 62.5/125 m and 50/125 m fiber optic cabling. The ports also include the ability to automatically configure themselves as either 10BASE-FL asynchronous and 10BASE-FB synchronous connections, depending on the type of equipment at the other end of the link. Each RJ-45 port features complete IEEE 802.3i 10BASE-T compatibility for supporting local connections over readily-available unshielded twisted pair copper cabling. Each cluster can be selectively assigned to any of the 12 Ethernet segments on the Model 5000 backplane, offering additional configuration flexibility. Clusters can also be assigned to a local module- level segment or isolated from the backplane to create a stand-alone cluster. The 10BASE-T ports include an auto-partitioning feature which disables connections in the event of excessive consecutive collisions, a single collision of excessive length or jabbering nodes. Ports are automatically reconnected once the fault is corrected. In addition, a per-port auto-polarity feature automatically detects and corrects wire-pair signal inversions. The 10BASE-T ports can also connect to IBM data grade Type 1 shielded twisted pair cabling using a SynOptics Model 822 10BASE-T-to-Type 1 Adapter. MODEL 5308 10BASE-T HOST MODULE The Model 5308 10BASE-T Host Module offers 24 10BASE-T connections to support host stations operating at 10 Mb/s over unshielded twisted pair cabling. The Model 5308 offers a compact solution for high-density 10BASE-T network environments. The module can be assigned, either manually or through software selection, to any of the 12 Ethernet segments on the Model 5000 hub backplane, offering additional configuration flexibility. The Model 5308 includes the auto-partitioning and auto-polarity features included with the Model 5378-F. The module can also support host connections over IBM Type 1 shielded twisted pair cabling using the Model 822 10BASE-T-to-Type 1 Adapter. MODEL 5308-AF 10BASE-T HOST MODULE WITH AUI AND FIBER INTERCONNECT PORTS The Model 5308-AF 10BASE-T Host Module offers 16 RJ-45 modular receptacles to support Ethernet host stations operating over unshielded twisted pair cabling. The module also includes attachment unit interface (AUI) and fiber interconnect ports for supporting connections to other compatible devices. The Model 5308-AF offers a hierarchical solution for supporting 10BASE-T workgroups while providing direct access to higher-level devices such as Model 5000 hubs in the wiring closet. Like the Model 5308, the Model 5308-AF can be assigned to any of the 12 Model 5000 backplane Ethernet segments. Each 10BASE-T host port includes auto-partitioning and auto- polarity functionality and can support shielded twisted pair connections using the Model 822 10BASE-T-to-Type 1 Adapter. The fiber interconnect port offers dual ST-type bayonet connectors to support links to compatible equipment over 62.5/125 m and 50/125 m fiber optic cabling. The port automatically configures itself as either a 10BASE-FL asynchronous or a 10BASE-FB synchronous connection, depending on the equipment at the other end of the link. The AUI interconnect port supports connections to compatible devices over a variety of media, including shielded twisted pair, unshielded twisted pair, fiber optic and coaxial cabling, using the appropriate transceiver. SYSTEM 5000 ETHERNET MODULE MANAGEMENT System 5000 Ethernet modules are fully integrated into the SynOptics Optivity(tm) network management system, enabling network managers to monitor and control network activity from a central management station. Management information is forwarded from host modules to System 5000 Ethernet network management modules over a higheed Common Management Bus (CMB) on the Model 5000 backplane, ensuring rapid, timely reporting of network performance data. The network management modules evaluate and consolidate the information before forwarding it to the Optivity management station. The Ethernet modules appear in the Expanded View(tm) graphical user interface, providing network managers with unprecedented visibility into the network infrastructure. A variety of other views are also available, including the new Network Center View, ich introduces a new method for managing and configuring the enterprise network from a central management station. LED INDICATORS Each System 5000 Ethernet module includes a comprehensive front-panel LED matrix that reports module performance, configuration and status at a glance. All modules include a top-level annunciator LED to report overall board status. In addition, the Model 5378-F includes a Segment Connection LED field to indicate which segments are being used by the module; cluster-level LEDs to report received packets; and per-port LEDs to indicate link and partition status on an individual port basis. The Model 5308 and Model 5308-AF include a Segment Connection LED field to report which segments are being utilized or if the module is isolated from the hub backplane.
